U.S. Natural Disaster Statistics

Last week, the Washington Post published an article based on statistics from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information that document an increase in billon dollar natural disasters in the U.S. The numbers show what we are all seeing – the frequency and cost of climate-related disasters are increasing. The statistics use private and public information including insurance payments and infrastructure damage reports. In 2020 there were 22 billion-dollar disasters and in 2021 there were 20. These are the two highest annual numbers on record. The need for asset leadership in the face of growing natural disaster is clear. The ALN continues advocating for a structured approach to asset management to help increase resistance to natural disasters. Join us in Washington, D.C. on September 16, 2022 and contribute to the discussion on what can be done to better prepare U.S. infrastructure for increasing likelihood of natural disasters.
